Install a Sentinel app for your platform
Sentinel is a network, so you use it through a client app. The easiest is Phantom VPN — this guide's route: the App Store on iPhone and iPad (iOS 17.0+), the Mac App Store or a signed direct download on Mac (macOS 14 Sonoma+, Apple silicon and Intel), and Google Play on Android Android 8.0+. There is no Windows app.

Open the app and sign in with an email one-time code, Google, or Apple. An account is required, including on the free tier — it is what carries your minutes and subscription across devices. No wallet, seed phrase, or token is ever involved.

Tap Connect
One tap. The app queries the Sentinel chain (sentinelhub-2) for live WireGuard nodes, probes candidates for latency, ranks them, generates a fresh Curve25519 keypair on your device, and opens a direct tunnel to the fastest healthy node. The first connect asks you to approve the VPN configuration — that is the operating system's standard prompt, required of every VPN app.

Pick a country, or switch nodes
Automatic selection favours the lowest latency, which usually means somewhere near you. To exit from a specific country, pick it from the location list and the app connects to the best-ranked node there. If a node degrades mid-session — permissionless networks do this — the app fails over automatically; you can also just tap another location.

Verify the tunnel is doing its job

The flow is the same everywhere; the one-time system prompts and version requirements are not.
iPhone & iPad
- Requires iOS 17.0 or later (iPadOS on iPad). Install from the App Store via the download page.
- The first connect shows Apple's "Add VPN Configurations" prompt — approve it once and the system handles the rest. The tunnel then appears in Settings like any VPN.
- An optional setting reconnects automatically when your network changes, for example leaving home Wi-Fi for cellular. It is off by default; turn it on if you move around a lot.
- Universal purchase: Premium bought on iPhone covers your iPad and Mac — the account, not the device, holds the subscription.
Mac
- Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. Two routes: the Mac App Store, or a notarized direct download (a signed .pkg, about 8.1 MB) if you prefer to skip the store.
- macOS asks once to allow the VPN configuration; after that, connecting is one click from the app.
- The Mac app shares its core with the iOS app, so locations, minutes and Premium status are identical across your devices — sign in with the same account.
Android
- Requires Android 8.0 or later. Install from Google Play via the download page.
- Android shows its standard "Connection request" dialog on first connect — approving it creates the system VPN service the tunnel runs in.
- The app is native Kotlin, not a webview, and the same account carries your minutes and subscription to and from any Apple devices you use.
Windows is deliberately absent: Phantom VPN has no Windows app, and a setup guide that pretends otherwise would waste your time. The honest Windows routes into a dVPN are covered in thefull dVPN ranking.
What that one tap actually does.
You do not need this section to use the app. It is here because a guide that says "then magic happens" is not a guide.
Fresh keys, made on your device
Each connection generates a new Curve25519 keypair locally. The private key goes into your device keychain and never leaves it; only the public half is shared with the node. Nobody — including us — can decrypt the tunnel.
A public query, not a private list
Available nodes come from querying the Sentinel chain, sentinelhub-2 — the same public registry any app or person can read. Candidates are probed for latency and ranked before the tunnel opens.
A direct tunnel, with us not in it
The WireGuard tunnel runs from your device straight to the independently operated node. Your traffic never transits Phantom's systems — which is the structural difference a dVPN buys you, explained in full indVPN vs VPN.

Phantom is the easiest way onto Sentinel, not the only one. In fairness to the network, the alternatives:

Sentinel Shield (iPhone, iPad, Mac, plus direct-APK Android; priced in the DVPN token), Meile (Linux, macOS, Windows; paid on-chain) and Independent dVPN (free, volunteer-built, Android) all ride the same network. If you need Linux or Windows, Meile is the practical route — Phantom does not cover those platforms.
Running your own node
The network is permissionless, so you can be the infrastructure: register a node on the chain, carry traffic, and earn for the bandwidth you serve. It is a server-administration project rather than an app install; the official Sentinel docs cover the setup.

Android's standard "Connection request" dialog appears once; approving it lets the system create the VPN service the WireGuard tunnel runs inside. Node choice, latency ranking and failover work exactly as on the Apple platforms.
Can I use Sentinel dVPN on Windows or Linux?
Not with Phantom VPN — we have no Windows or Linux app, and we would rather say so than imply one. On those platforms the practical route into the Sentinel network is Meile dVPN by MathNodes, an open-source desktop client for Linux, macOS and Windows, paid on-chain in crypto. NymVPN and Mysterium also cover Windows if you are open to dVPNs on other networks.
How do I get free minutes, exactly?
In the app, choose to watch an ad: one ad of at least 30 seconds credits a 60-minute block, up to three ads a day, for a maximum of 180 earnable minutes daily and a 300-minute daily usage ceiling. Minutes only count down while you are connected, so an unused balance is not lost by disconnecting. The free tier requires sign-in, never asks for a card, and never converts to a paid plan on its own.
How does the app choose which node to connect me to?
It asks the Sentinel chain (sentinelhub-2) for nodes that are online and advertising WireGuard, measures latency to the candidates, ranks them fastest first, and connects to the top healthy one — recently failed nodes get pushed down the list. Choosing a country manually runs the same ranking within that country. Selection happens before you connect, which is why the first connection usually just works instead of needing you to shop for a fast server.
What should I do if the connection drops or a node is slow?
First, nothing: the app detects a failing node and fails over to the next-ranked one automatically. If a location feels slow, switching to another country or tapping reconnect gets you a freshly ranked node. Be aware of one honest limit while switching: Phantom has no kill switch yet, so in the moments between tunnels your traffic uses your normal connection. If leak-proof switching is a hard requirement for you today, a mature centralized VPN is the better fit.
Do I need to understand blockchain to use this?
No. The blockchain plays one backstage role: it is the public directory where node operators register and where the app looks nodes up. You never hold tokens, approve transactions, or see a wallet. If you can use an ordinary VPN app, you can use this one — the decentralized part changes who owns the servers, not what your thumb has to do.
