Stronger anonymity, by construction
A 5-hop mixnet that mixes traffic and generates cover noise defends against an observer who can watch the whole network correlate who-talks-to-whom. A one-hop VPN — ours included — simply does not attempt that. If your threat model includes traffic analysis, Nym's mixnet mode is the more serious tool and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Audits and open source
Nym's code is public and it lists independent security audits year over year, naming the firms. Phantom's clients are closed-source and we have not published an independent audit, so we do not use the word. On verifiability, Nym is ahead of us, full stop.
You can be anonymous to Nym itself
NymVPN accounts are a 24-word passphrase, no email required, and they accept cash and Monero. Phantom requires sign-in and holds your email. If account-level anonymity matters to you, that is a category difference, not a nuance.
Windows and Linux
NymVPN ships on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows and Linux. Phantom covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android only. If your desktop is not a Mac, Nym runs there and Phantom does not.

One hop is the faster architecture
Every hop and every mix adds latency; that is not a criticism of Nym, it is the price of the property they sell, and they are candid about it — it is why a 2-hop fast mode exists at all. Phantom runs a single WireGuard hop to the node that measured fastest from your device, with automatic failover. For a VPN that is on all day, under video calls and games, the lighter architecture is the point.

A permissionless node network you can read
Phantom's exit nodes are independent operators on Sentinel, discovered by a public query to sentinelhub-2 — a list you can verify on-chain rather than take on faith, spanning 15+ countries as a floor. The app publisher is not in the traffic path, structurally.

Is Phantom VPN faster than NymVPN?
Architecturally, one hop is less work than two and far less than five — Phantom sends your traffic through a single WireGuard tunnel to the node that measured fastest from your device. Nym's mixnet mode pays a real latency cost for its anonymity properties, which Nym itself acknowledges by offering a separate 2-hop fast mode. We have not run a head-to-head benchmark and will not invent one; on any given day the node you land on matters more than the diagram.
Is NymVPN more private than Phantom VPN?
Against sophisticated traffic analysis, yes — that is what a mixnet is for, and Phantom does not attempt it. At the account layer, also yes: Nym signs you up with a passphrase instead of an email and takes cash and Monero, while Phantom requires sign-in and retains connect/disconnect events, node and time, minutes used, and your email. Phantom's privacy argument is structural but narrower: the tunnel runs directly from your device to an independent node, so our servers are never in your traffic path. We would rather draw the line accurately than claim properties we do not have.
How much does Phantom VPN cost compared to NymVPN?

Does Phantom VPN require cryptocurrency like NYM?
